Chatter at the Orthodontist’s
Posted on April 22nd, 2008 in Personal |
I don’t know what’s wrong with my orthodontist. At my appointment today, I told her that I need my braces off by May since I’ll be out of the country for a month (she actually first told me that I could have them off by last October, then March, then April…). So she says something about “picky, crazy schedules” - yes, I’m so glad MY life isn’t monotonous and repetitive like yours, dear orthodontist!
Then I ask about follow-up appointments after I get them off, and mentioned in passing that I may not be available for a year. She inquires what school I’m going to, and I tell her Cal, most likely. It would’ve been great if she left it at that, but nooooo, this lady who’s been nice and cheerful for the past two years suddenly goes on this huge rant about Cal and how it’s gonna brainwash undergrad students like me and how its liberal influence will result in me cutting off all communications with my family and ruining my future prospects in marriage (”Just like York University in Ontario, my friend’s daughter went there!” she says). First of all, wtf?! I never asked for her opinion so why give it, especially when I’m paying her (and her huge assistant staff) $6000 to do their jobs! She barely knows anything about me yet she insists that “don’t think that the liberal campus won’t effect you and turn you into someone else, because it will!”. She apparently visited it the campus with her daughter a few years back and her husband was highly offended that they even went there (gee, I wonder where her daughter ended up going, the ultra conservative local community college?). It’s a public education institution for God’s sake, not a hippie sex corner where radical young people riot all day!
In addition, there was also a mini-lecture about how “education won’t bring you happiness… trust Dr. - (she often talks about herself in third-person like I’m a little kid), I have blah blah blah many degrees and I’ve seen what happened to people I know!”
Wow, are people now-a-days in this industry SO TERRIFIED of and SO AGITATED over losing a customer that they will proceed to rant about stupid topics?! Ugh, get a grip woman!

Wow, she definitely went off on a tangent there…
If she’s a doctor she must have had a LOT of education!
“education won’t bring you happiness” - is that from personal experience?
@Regina - Haha maybe she got fed up with her medical education! Poor bitter, bitter lady =P
Okay END sympathy lol!
It’s good to know I’m not the only one left out there who’s this old and still has braces. I’m getting mine taken off next month, too =)
Maybe your orthodontist had personal bad experiences with schools. Or, she might try to talk as if she knows more than she does.
But on the bright side, you’re so lucky you’re going back to China this summer! My parents just tell me, “Since you’re going back to China next summer for something related with college, you don’t need to go back this summer.” So yeah…instead…I’ll be finding a job and working…while my sister and mom go back.
That’s really weird about your orthodontist passing judgement about your choice of university! I’d have thought it was out of line too - surely it’s not her business where you choose to go!?
Btw, come read about the college I just blogged about, lol, it might frighten you. A lot.
And what makes her think you aren’t liberal already?
(Not that you are, as I wouldn’t know, but you could be.)
She talks about herself in the third person?!
Anyway, WHATEVER. This woman needs a life, clearly. Reminds me of when Juno has that conversation with the ultrasound technician:
Ultrasound Technician: Well, there you have it. Would you like to know the sex?
Leah: Yes!
Juno MacGuff: No!
Leah: Pleease, Juno, please!
Juno MacGuff: No, there will be no sex!
Ultrasound Technician: Planning to be suprised when you deliver?
Juno MacGuff: Well, no, but I want Mark and Vanessa to be suprised and if you tell me I’ll just, like, ruin everything.
Ultrasound Technician: Are Mark and Vanessa your friends at school?
Juno MacGuff: No, no, no. They’re the adoptive parents.
Ultrasound Technician: Oh, well thank goodness for that!
And THEN they have the whole bitch fight about it, which is hilarious, and Juno’s stepmom says;
Bren: What is your job title exactly?
Ultrasound Technician: I’m an ultrasound technician, ma’am.
Bren: Well, I’m a nail technician and I think we both ought to just stick to what we know.
So, dentist/orthodontist lady, you didn’t go this college, what do you know?
x
Just a girl
I hear lots of bad stories about people’s experiences at their orthodontists (or read, rather… on blogs). Yours sounds like a very unhappy lady. “Education won’t bring you happiness,” eh? Well, neither will having no degree and a crappy dead-end job, so you might as well let yourself learn something. Silly orthodontist.
Cal… Berkeley, right? I think that’s what you wrote in one of your comments. One of my first affiliates, Shelly, goes there.
Sounds like she really needed to mind her own business. I hate it how some people think they know everything and they have no clue.
Love your blogs btw.
Wow sure, let’s all forget about university and dive straight into the working world, because it’s totally different and fun!
It was probably just a bad day for her, though, if she hasn’t been doing that all these time you visited her.
Wow lol sorry to hear about your Orthodontist. My orthondontist hated me and only spoke to me when he absolutly had to, I’m not sure which is worse lol.
Oh, I sympathize - I had the orthodontist from hell, too. In my case, the longer my braces stayed on, the more we paid (I’m not sure if you were given one whole price up front for the whole shebang complete with visits, but I wasn’t). Eventually, it got to the point where I, at 14, told them that either they’re coming off NOW, right this very second, or I’m switching orthodontists and getting them off somewhere else. They came off. She scheduled a series of “follow-up appointments” - up to $100 a pop, monthly. I’m now 21. I never went back, no matter how many times they called. I did, however, find an awesome new dentist who takes great care of me.
I’d tell her that while I thank her for her interest in my life, the school decision is mine, kthxbai.
Sheesh, do you have to use her! I guess someone’s mortgage payments are piling up.
lol I’ve once again come to comment under to command of despair.nu jkjk anyways, I sometimes get pretty uncomfortable when doctors etc talk so much…
LOL, third person talking. Wtf? Ugh. I hate it when people interfere when it’s not their business. Seriously…I guess there’s not a lot of interaction going on between their family…
omgosh. I can’t stand the orthodontist or the dentist. I are afraid.
Personally I’d love to go to a liberal college full of rioting hippies! It sound way better than some ultra-conservative college where people just pray and praise Bush all day.
Your dentist sounds weird. I guess she don’t think education won’t bring you happiness because she herself studied a lot and now hate her life.
I really get aggravated when people like that come around me. I always thought I had a real problem, but it’s glad to know I’m not the only that feel this way. I never ask for anyones opinion when it comes to my personal life. “Dude I don’t even know you!”. This is what I really want to say. I hate to sound rude but I would’ve been squirming in my chair, ready to break loose and leave.
Would I be wrong if I blurted out “shut up!” ? :???:
She should cut the small talk and focused on the matter at hand.
… because I’m sure that attitude makes you want to go back. I can’t believes she’s delayed taking off your braces for 6 months!! I’d be so angry! I was angry when mine got delayed by a month because the orthodontist stuffed up.
Wow…… how very idiotic and lame. That must be frustrating. I hate having small-talk with people like that and best of all, nosy conversation. I like my life to be private…
Wow, she certainly gave you an earful! I hate it whenever other people try to force their beliefs on you. It’s like…I can think for myself and don’t need more propaganda.
Haha! Wow, she *sounds* relatively unhappy with her life for sure… ranting and raving at patients like that. Maybe she should look into a career change?
You would think that she would keep her opinion to herself if she wanted to keep you as a patient. I’m glad that you aren’t taking her comment to heart. She probably just had a bad experience with the school for some reason.
