NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.
After reading briefly from the final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” she took questions from audience members.
She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds “true love.”
“Dumbledore is gay,” the author responded to gasps and applause.
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. “Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” Rowling said of Dumbledore’s feelings, adding that Dumbledore was “horribly, terribly let down.”
Dumbledore’s love, she observed, was his “great tragedy.”
“Oh, my god,” Rowling concluded with a laugh, “the fan fiction.”
Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.
Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.
Rowling, finishing a brief “Open Book Tour” of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a “prolonged argument for tolerance” and urged her fans to “question authority.”
Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.
Does anyone remember, when in Book 5, Dumby told Harry that he’s loved him? PEDOPHILE! … or too much Law and Order Special Victims Unit. My poor innocent obesession! What authors will do for some publicity! *shakes head*
From my friend, “I think Harry was molested. Then had his memory modified.” …. I wouldn’t put it past Albus. OR maybe Tom Riddle was too, no wonder the kid turned out so messed up!

Hah, that’s awesome! Although that kills my Albus/Minerva fondness. Ah well, I shall go back to Minerva/Tom Riddle and Tom/Ginny.

@ Becky and Catherine - I’ve always shipped McGonagall and Snape (there was a split second in GoF where they were standing together :biggrin: ) But then… the scandal with Lily came along!
I read that this morning, I did not expect that at all!
The first thing that came to my mind after reading that was what Harry’s friends would think if they knew that. You know, since he spent like his whole life alone with Dumbledore =P

On the other hand, I luff JKR even more now. It’s nice to know the HP world can be as inclusive as it is ethnically diverse. And yeah, I’m socially liberal like that.
A thought just crossed my mind. What if JKR has finally succumbed to the slashers? Or perhaps they kidnapped her and threatened to not let her go unless she succumbed to their demands to admit to gay characters being in HP? Will another revelation come out of the closet?? Is Snape really the Bloody Baron’s lover??

This is… kind of funny news. It’s strange how she told us that Dumbledore was gay after the last book of the series. It would have made more sense if she somehow revealed it in the last book. I always thought Dumbledore was secretly in love with Minerva (I can’t spell her last name).

I was right. *smug grin* :3 I said that Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s relationship was closer than just friends which was why it hurt Dumbledore so much and was his greatest tragedy. Everyone just said I was reading too much into things. Nice to be proven right. I gotta go blog this now.
I just had to comment on that SVU thing xD I loooveee that show -there was a Season 8 marathon yesterday, and yeah, SVU basically made me think that everyone was a pedophile, lmfao.
