O Canada! No Canada
// August 13th, 2008 // Academic, World for the Week
While China is counting how many medals they’re getting on the first day of Olympics 2008, Canada is trying to figure out how many days they’ll have to wait before getting their first medal. I mean, our athletes try really hard and good for them! But it’s slightly amusing that Canada is behind Azerbaijan, Togo, and Kyrgyzstan. Zimbabwe is way ahead of Canada with three medals XD. In a situation such as this, it’s so much more exciting cheering for China (and Michael Phelps)!
So these past few days, I’ve been watching the Olympics on TV and on NBC and CBC online (my family are huge Olympics fans haha), writing scathing reviews pointing out all the bias in my local newspaper against Beijing, sneaking online to check medal standings at work… haha good times!
Sadly summer’s slowly coming to an end and all my friends are gradually scattering to all corners of the world. It’s a strange feeling because with my record of ten different schools in the last twelve years of public education (my family moved around a LOT), I was always the one leaving, heading off to somewhere exciting. Now I’m going to good ol’ University of British Columbia with my parents as roommates (don’t even get me started on those bus trips I’ll have to take every morning, the very ones I swore not to be a part of last year after seeing all the worn out UBC students on the bus). Despite all the great events I can look forward to, I find loneliness setting in =[
Oh well, no time to wallow! Now taking bets on how many days it will take Canada to get a medal, ANY medal! My money’s on Day 10-11. Laaaaaaame.

New Zealand is in the same boat, and our most likely-to-win-medals athletes have been struck with a case of the um, squirts… due to the quality of the food in China.
At least Canada usually pwn the Winter Olympics!
UBC, eh? I think I know someone that goes there, what are you majoring in?
I’m definitely cheering for China, it’s pretty sad that the reporters have to make excuses for the Canadian athletes.
The worst part was that Mike Brown missed getting a medal by nine one hundredths of a second. I was practically sobbing, it was terrible! I’m an addict too - I do nothing but watch highlights on Youtube/watch NBC all day.
I don’t get the obsession NBC has with Phelps. It’s a bit creepy, to be honest.
I wish Canada will at least win ONE medal.
It seems to me that they’re good enough to get to the Olympics, yet not good enough to win a medal. For now,at least. Come on, Canada!
Arielle,I know, it freaks me out. Every news channel is Phelps this and Phelps that. It’s like he’s the only athlete…
Haha yeah, I keep hearing on the radio that we haven’t one any medals yet. Maybe we’ll have a comeback at the end of the Olympics. I personally don’t watch the Olympics. I think it’s boring.
Have fun with school. For my undergrad I lived at home and took the bus to school. It took about 1 hour and 15 mins but I didn’t mind it. I was able to do some homework (reading) on the bus to kill time. Or I would listen to some music. It was a pretty good time to just sit and think (or study).
I’ve been watching the Olympics this year too, although in the past I never really have. It seems they only show the same sports (swimming and volleyball) when there are clearly others going on, which is disappointing. Like once there was a baseball game, USA vs. Korea, and they showed the WHOLE thing. That’s not necessary. I wanted to see something else! Like fencing. We kicked butt in one fencing event and where was it on TV? Nowhere. Tsk tsk.
My mom is like obsessed with Michael Phelps lol. She keeps trying to stay up to watch him swim, when she never stays up that late. But he’s incredible! He not only wins, he sets world records at the same time. He’s insane.
When do you start classes? I start on the 25th. Out of my friends, I’m one of the first batches to leave; a lot of my friends are going to closer schools that don’t start until later.
awww same here, Philippines. :/
yay for the olympics!
it’s both sad and fun that the summer games are every four years because i love this time of year, but having it more frequently wouldn’t make it as special, i suppose.
heh, i’m sorry for canada, but at least you’ve got mr. phelps to cheer on.
i’m sure you’ll meet a lot of new people and friends at school, there’s tons of people there! i have confidence it’ll be a great experience.
Don’t worry about making friends kiddo :3. If you’re honest and present yourself as you are without faking it, friends will come. UBC is a place with very diverse minds and there will always be people who have something in common. This is coming from a 4th year student at UBC by the way… And the whole tired student on the bus thing… it is inevitable. Do not avoid it. Embrace the fatigue. Join us in our drooling headbobbing slumber =D.
I have to be honest, I’ve not really been watching the Olympics! Good luck with Uni!
Nellie already beat me too it, but it took NZ rather a lot time to win some medals too. We did eventually though, I think we have 9 now!
yay olympics! i really suck.. i totally missed the closing ceremony…
