School, what else?

Before I start apologizing profusely for my lack of commitment to blogging, let me just say to the students out there, good luck with school. They say IB Year 2 is hell on earth. So far it’s been pretty much cruising along. We had a few hectic deadlines (Extended Essay Draft Two, Self-Directed Studies, Planning Labs) and one test, for Math Higher Level.
It had one damn question on it.
Worth 30 or so marks.
Teacher gave us 8 minutes. Ready, set, go.
I made a mistake in the fourth step and screwed up everything after it. What’s sad is that I did SIMPLE INTEGRATION wrong! I got all the hard part with the separable and exact first order linear differential equations (this is calculus, for those who got lost at “integration”). //End Rant. Pfft, pulling a semi-lucid semi-nighter was so not worth it (I had my alarm going off every hour in case I fell asleep, which I did)

Today we went to see Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar performed at Bard on the Beach - internationally acclaimed professional summer Shakespeare Theatre Festival under the tents in Vanier Park, Vancouver - which we were studying in class. I prefer Shakespeare’s more comedic plays, namely Measure for Measure, which Bard had last year. JC is basically a long string of debates employing logos, pathos, and ethos. Have you guys read it?
Throughout the whole play, I gave the two people sitting next to me a continuous comment on how the actors’ costumes were similar to that of Harry Potter. Brutus has a very funky black cloak much like that of Severus Snape (Ugh, parallel structures… the result of long and strenous SAT practice sets. Who else is taking it in October? Join the stress club!) At the end of the play one of my friends went into a squealing fit because the actor who played Metellus Cimber or something looked like Elliot Stabler on Law and Order Special Victims Unit.

Aww, I wanted to go to Bard on the Beach too
Wow, IB is the stress… D:
*hugs* Good luck on your school stuff and for the pSATs
Aw…calc…haha. I do not have to look back on that until next year in college! I’m happy I’m just in statistics now, which is a sigh of relief compared to calc. Soooo much easier! Pay attention to series and sequences! I don’t know if you learned it yet (I don’t know about IB) or will learn it–it’s a pain. Just pay lots and lots of attention if your teacher explains anything or read up on it yourself (I didn’t pay attention nor read about it, so I freaked on the exam).
Eh…I’m not trying to sound like a jerk here, but “Brutus had a very funky black cloak much like that of Severus Snape” is supposed to be “Brutus has a very funky black cloak much like that of Severus Snape’s black coat.” It’s the comparison thing in grammar. Just wanted to point that out if you didn’t already know because on the SAT, they have that a couple of times (I’m sure you know that already though)!
Ouch, that’s quite a time limit! But you’ll get some marks for your working out right?
I loved calculus. :yummy:
Your calc teacher seems amazing
Hopefully you will not have done that bad on the test, or else you can make it up by getting straight 100’s for the rest of the year ;P
Good luck with all your educational stuff!
Ahahaha. Glad to see a fellow HP fan who also happens to be in IB.
Do you compare things in “Real Life” to Harry Potter? My friends are now convinced I’m too much of a fan after I compared my school and its surrounding area to that of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, hand-crafted my own wand out of wood, and dragged them to various premieres of the HP movies (I couldn’t drag them to midnight parties, unfortunately).
Good luck on your EE.
@ Eina - You should go! A few of my friends volunteered and I heard Romeo and Juliet was pretty good. Be careful where you’re sitting though, some people got flashed by Romeo :blank:
@ Yingna - That’s odd… I’m looking at a few SAT questions and the structures are all “so-and-so’s performance is better than that of so-and-so”. If you say “that of” AND the apostrophe s, isn’t it repetition? I’m not sure, I’ll look this up
@ Belinda - I better. “Loved”? Not anymore?
@ IB Student - My god, I’m the Queen of all HP Real Life references here. I haven’t made any wands ye… well! I know what I’m doing tonight!
Nyahaha, I hope we can go this year. Oh my, flashed by Romeo :O! That’s interesting..
Oh, and I work near Robson Street, pretty awesome people there. *nodnod*
Yingna - Eh…I’m not trying to sound like a jerk here, but “Brutus had a very funky black cloak much like that of Severus Snape†is supposed to be “Brutus has a very funky black cloak much like that of Severus Snape’s black coat.†No, it was right the first time. The cloak is much like the one Snape has, the “that of” is naught but a substitute for the apostrophe s. Your way makes it redundant. And just for the record, I got a 790 on the writing portion of the SAT, so I know damn well what I’m talking about.
So Crystal, don’t worry about it at all, and don’t stress over the SAT! It’s not worth it, and if you’ve been doing the practice tests, I guarantee that you will do well. In truth, those practice tests give you a deflated sense of your score, so if you’re averaging around ~2100, I’m willing to bet that your actual SAT will land above the 97th percentile. And honestly, I think anybody who reaches that point should be happy with their score.
@ Leila - 790?! *ALL HAILS* I got 760 last time on writing with 2 wrong answers. My CR flopped though, so that’s what I’m focusing on this time, and of course, getting perfect on math. Thanks for your comforting words
URGH. HL Maths?! Ick. Sounds…like a whole lot of fun! :O
Good luck with school.
School’s kind of intimidating to me now. It’s not nearly as laid back as it used to be.
I dunno…I haven’t seen something on a practice SAT where they did that. It’s that missing something…I forgot what it’s called. It begins with an M. When I read the sentence, it sounds kind of funny to me, even with the use of “that of.” It sounds like you’re comparing the cloak to a person. Like, if you change “how the actors’ costumes were similar to that of Harry Potter” to
how Ronnie’s dog was similar to that of Mike…it just sounds funny. Unless that’s just me.
Wait, wait, wait…I think when you use “that of,” you have to put an ’s after the name. Like the cloak was similar to that of Harry’s. Otherwise, it’s weird. I think that’s grammatically correct, but it shouldn’t be used in formal writing.
I didn’t see this before. Hm…I dunno…it still sounds funny. I’ll search it up and comment back later. It just still sounds like something is unclear. But it might also because I read the line quite a few times and the more I read it, the more funny it sounds. I’ll see.
Yay for grammar discussions :cute:
I think it seems to flow more when using “that of” only when there isn’t an apostrophe s.
For example
The university’s library has more books than the city’s.
The library at the university has more books than that of of the city.
Just off the top of my head.
Aw, my IB Math HL wasn’t that bad. Wtf?
Haha grammar discussions. We have those at least twice every week in World Lit class. Okay, everyday because my teacher is in love with grammar, but still..
