O Canada! No Canada

// August 13th, 2008 // 13 Comments » // Academic, World for the Week

While China is counting how many medals they’re getting on the first day of Olympics 2008, Canada is trying to figure out how many days they’ll have to wait before getting their first medal.  I mean, our athletes try really hard and good for them! But it’s slightly amusing that Canada is behind Azerbaijan, Togo, and Kyrgyzstan. Zimbabwe is way ahead of Canada with three medals XD. In a situation such as this, it’s so much more exciting cheering for China (and Michael Phelps)!

So these past few days, I’ve been watching the Olympics on TV and on NBC and CBC online (my family are huge Olympics fans haha), writing scathing reviews pointing out all the bias in my local newspaper against Beijing, sneaking online to check medal standings at work… haha good times!

Sadly summer’s slowly coming to an end and all my friends are gradually scattering to all corners of the world. It’s a strange feeling because with my record of ten different schools in the last twelve years of public education (my family moved around a LOT), I was always the one leaving, heading off to somewhere exciting. Now I’m going to good ol’ University of British Columbia with my parents as roommates (don’t even get me started on those bus trips I’ll have to take every morning, the very ones I swore not to be a part of last year after seeing all the worn out UBC students on the bus). Despite all the great events I can look forward to, I find loneliness setting in =[

Oh well, no time to wallow! Now taking bets on how many days it will take Canada to get a medal, ANY medal! My money’s on Day 10-11. Laaaaaaame.

Olympics Fever

// August 4th, 2008 // 20 Comments » // Fashion, Quotables

Countdown to Beijing Olympics 2008: 4 days.

My family’s favourite pasttime is gathering in front of the television to spend “quality time” with each other. So when the Olympics roll around every four years, it’s a huge deal for my folks in the entertainment department. For anyone who hasn’t seen the dress rehearsal fireworks pictures from Beijing’s Bird’s Nest, I recommend you to check it out right away. It totally DWARVES what went down in Vancouver last weekend (HSBC Celebration of Lights).

In the last issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Lucy Liu made several appearances in Spring Couture 2008 clothes posing for Olympics events (photo credits). It totally adds that extra pizazz and glamour the Games need! Observe.

Lucy Liu in Armani (track and field)
Eye-catching red dress from the Armani Prive spring collection.

Lucy Liu in Chanel

Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera (Archery)
This archery one in Carolina Herrera is my favorite of the set.

Lucy Liu in Christian Dior (Boxing)

Lucy Liu in Dolce and Gabbana (Track and Field)

Where can I get this Dolce and Gabanna bag?!

Lucy Liu in Jean Paul Gaultier (Weightlifting)

Haha I know all of you jock types are totally frowning upon replacing weights with Jean Paul Gaultier bags.

Lucy Liu in Alexander McQueen (Sprint)

Lucy Liu in Givenchy (gymnastics)

Lucy Liu in Versace (balance beam)

Hmm… this Versace gown may have looked better on the runway.

Lucy Liu in Christian Lacroix (Metals)
So patriotic eh?

And this is my parting thought for this fashion-filled entry:

Karl Legerfield Ad

The popular creative director of Chanel and Fendi, Karl Legerfield, has been asked by road safety chiefs in France to front their latest campaign, encouraging drivers to wear light-reflecting clothing when traveling at night. The translation, “It’s yellow. It’s ugly. It doesn’t go with anything, but it could save your life.

P.S. - finally updated the Links in the sidebar with Sarai, Shen-Shen, Alex, Rilla and a few other blogs that I read.

So, any questions for me about the city/country? Want to check if your site works in China?

I’m in a web cafe XD. Mum’s rushing, gotta dash.
