That’s life…

Dear —,
I am sorry to notify you that after reviewing your application thoroughly, our selection committee is unable to offer you admission to the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 2012. All aspects of your application, the academic and the non-academic, were considered carefully and compared to those of the rest of the applicant pool.
Perhaps the most difficult part of my job is writing similar letters to thousands of students, whose accomplishments are promising and exciting. I realize that Penn was your first choice school and it might be particularly difficult for you to learn of this decision at this time. I assure you that the selection committee gave your application every consideration, but, because of an unprecedented number of outstanding applicants we have to deny admission to a large majority of the remarkable students who seek admission to Penn. Most of our applicants are qualified to pursue successfully a program of study at Penn; however, only a relatively small percentage can be admitted.
We are pleased to have received your application. I am sincerely sorry to disappoint you, yet trust that you will have other opportunities to attend another very good college. I wish you the best in the future.
Sincerely,
Eric J. Kaplan
Interim Dean of Admissions

Aw, don’t be too bummed, Crystal. The Ivy League is extremely selective to start, and a lot of the decisions seem to be quite arbitrary. I know a guy from last year’s senior class who got a 2400 on his SAT and Princeton rejected him. So just because Penn said no, that doesn’t mean that you’re not a great student. A lot of my friends applied to Penn, too, and I know most of them are going to get rejected, even if they are great candidates. (Penn was the “it” school for my senior class, for some reason.) In fact, I think no more than one of the students who applied from my school will get accepted. It’s just that selective.
But it’s not the end of the world to be rejected. There are tons of great universities outside of the Ivy League with fabulous opportunities. Like Syracuse, for example, is a relatively large research university with a wide range of majors, extracurricular activities, and community connections. Not only did it have the specific major I wanted, but it’s going to give me the opportunity to participate in scientific research with professors, the chance to live in NYC for a semester and do my student teaching, and I’ll get to be a part of a hugely spirited school and go to crazy football and basketball games. Even though I’m sure I would have been a strong candidate for an Ivy League school (I even visited Cornell), I knew that Syracuse fit me so much better, and I probably will get much more money from them than from the Ivy League. There are so many factors to consider when choosing which college to attend, and “prestige” certainly shouldn’t be the deciding factor.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ll get into a great school and will have a very successful university career, Crystal. Wherever you wind up going, that’s the place you belong, and I’m sure you’ll excel and be an outstanding member of the student body. Best of luck, although I know your strength as a candidate can stand on its own (even if it doesn’t feel like it can right now).
Aww
*hugs*
I can’t believe this… I guess that is part of the whole applying for Ivy League thing. Too bad that they have so many applicants and so little spaces. I can’t imagine how down thousands of other kids should be feeling right now.
You have great qualifications Crystal, and I’m sure they are good enough for any Ivy League school. It’s their lose! I know that you can go and be successful in another wonderful school, I just hope that you applied to other good universities…
I would keep on writing about this but I have to go to work, so take care sweetie and rock on, because you have the smarts, and smart people can kick ass anywhere they go.
Aww, sorry you didn’t get accepted.
I’m sorry you didn’t get in, that sucks.
That is a real shame, but other opportunities will arise eventually.
Good luck with finding some form of compensation and I hope you aren’t too upset by this xo
I’m a bit late in the game, but aww. The pain of rejection is always hard to heal. Hope your other choices turn out to be better fits for you.
