Tuition Woes
Posted on April 6th, 2008 in QOTW, School/IB Program |
It’s official, one more month until the dreaded May IB exams. I have 8 exams in the first week, 3 in the second, and 5 in the last week. Then I’m hopping on a flight to China =D
So if I die from the internet, you know why.
Also, I decided that I will be attending Berkeley next year (go bears!). I saved this as a draft yesterday, and it’s surprising how quickly opinions can change. Right now, I’ve hit some kind of rut in regards to my future and in particular, my post-secondary education. I really don’t know what to do. Tuition and living expenses at UC Berkeley costs over US$40 000. Let me break it down for you.
COSTS AND EXPENSES
- Housing for a year: $10 999 (Cheapest possible as I will be living in a triple, which basically is three people squeezed into a room meant for two to save money, a basic meal point plan is included)
- Registration and fees: $8 384
- Non-resident tuition: $19 620 (this one’s a killer)
- Books and supplies: $1 000 (they gave an estimate of $1200, but if I buy all second-hand, I might cut it down a bit)
- Personal expenses: $800 (again, this is almost half of their estimate, I think I can manage if I keep clothes buying and eating out to a minimum)
- Transportation, Medical, Miscellaneous: $700 (I’m trying to see if my current insurance covers the U.S.)
——————–
TOTAL: US $41 503 per school year
STUDENT RESOURCES
- Maximum parental contribution: US$10 000/year (this means emptying out their retirement savings, and putting the $200 000 they owe on the apartment and the car on hold)
- Estimated summer earnings: $2 800 (working at average $10/h full time for two months, minus tax)
- Estimated school year earnings: $2 000 (working at average $12/h 4h/week for seven months)
- High school scholarship: $1 000
- Pending Bank of Montreal Student Loan: $10 000 (this is their max, I doubt I’ll get all of it)
- Pending BC Government Student Aid: $5 000 (this is also their max, haven’t seen any one get it yet)
- Relatives’ contributions: 3500 Chinese Yuan –> $500
——————–
TOTAL: US $31 300 for the first year only
STILL NEED: $10 203*
*Assuming the impossibility of no extra expenses. In my second year, the university will provide some financial aid but the bank interests will go up, aack. My parents’ contributions will be cut by half and I’ll probably work two jobs in the summer.
To fill that void, I have been applying to every single scholarship I can get my hand-on (hate the fact that most of them either say “American citizens only” or “will be attending Canadian institution”). I’ve also started writing letters to local businesses and other banks/boards/anything-with-a-mailing-address in the hope of securing some - any - donations. Berkeley has been sort of a dream school and it’d be devastating if I miss this opportunity due to financial struggles. In addition, I’m very conflicted between my aspirations and placing such a heavy burden on my parents.
My friend (who’s going to USC and came within a hair of winning their scholarship, but didn’t) and I came up with the following ideas to get some funds:
- LEGALIZED CHILD PORN - any takers? Yes yes? Now hiring actors. Hot people only =D
- A Facebook application that takes the world by storm, hoo-hah!
- Bank robbery - acceptance offer could be rescinded on criminal record, never mind
- Selling CDs of the film my friend made in IB Film at $5 each - he sold 4 copies already, only 7996 more to go!
Some of them still need a little bit of fine-tuning XD. In the mean time, I have two questions/requests to ask of you dear readers.
QOTW: can you think of more ways to pay for costly university tuitions?
And see that little orange box in the sidebar that says “Donate”? Any amount, no matter how small and how big, will be greatly appreciated. The donor’s name and any other info you like posted will be permanently posted on my site. A heart-felt thank you from me to you!
UPDATE
- Thank you Momo for the first donation ever! Everyone go give her some love =D
- I now have a progress bar in the sidebar, documenting my progress. Amounts added include online earnings (not part-time jobs or anything mentioned in resources), additional scholarships, and donations.

Keep applying for those scholarships.
If you haven’t already, you absolutely must call Berkeley’s financial aid office, tell them that you really want to go there, but that you’d be an international student… and that you need to know how they expect you to pay for this.
Trying searching for scholarships and grants. I got a grant from the government that pays for all my classes, books (with the exception of maybe one depending on how many I need), and whatever else is required for a class.
I agree with Chantelle–call their office and see what they can do to help accommodate you. I think colleges usually want to keep the students they accept, so they will try to help you to the best of their abilities.
Keep on applying for scholarships and see if you can find a good paying job in the meantime. What are you passionate about? See if you can find some way to make money in that field.
I’m absolutely bollocks at budgeting…so sorry.
You could try blackmail. Or robbery. Or theft. You’re smart enough to not get caught.
Anyhow, good luck with any and all choices you make!
ohhhhhhh…it’s very costly to get a good education
i wish you luck in getting through this financial hurdle crystal.
I agree with Yingna and Chantelle. Also, get a summer internship. For investment banks, you can earn at least 600 pounds per week in london, am I’m sure it won’t be any less in America. (they are interested in people of all disciplines.)
Or, you could create a million dollar website selling pixels.
Good luck! And don’t you guys have any form of student loans?
I really feel for you because some time ago I had the same issue. Luckily for me, my country gives me free tertiary education (because I’m a citizen) but I pay them back in the form of work.
I strongly suggest that you call Berkley’s financial aid office and find out about every scholarship/bursary that they have to offer and find out how to qualify. Also you can consider the possibility of a student loan. While your parents bear the “burden” of being co-signers, you won’t have to worry about them wiping out their savings. However once you graduate you’ll be swimming in student loan debt. At least it means that your tuition, etc. is covered with no worries. I know you want to go to Berkley but consider your options. There may be other schools that can give you what you want. I wish I could say something more to help you, but I hope you get through this. Education, as expensive as it is, is a priceless asset.
by the way are you going to go watch the games in beijing?
Wow that sounds like a really difficult situation, i hope something works out for you though.
The only thing I can suggest is scholarships or a loan, if you’re eligible. I’m sorry I’m not more familiar with the way American university tuition fees work. :O
OUCH.
That’s why I’m not attending college, I and my parents can’t afford it with everything…. ><
Good luck with saving money for tuition! It’s tough, really tough.
Wow, is a place to live that expensive where you live? Here you can get a place like that for around € 300 per month (which is around $ 471 USD or $ 477 CAD, so that’s around $ 5700 CAD per year). I hope you will be able to get a scholarship. And yay for donations. Perhaps you could also offer paid website designs or coding or something? Or sell drawings if you’re good at that, or perhaps you could sell logos or something. Oh and promote your website as much as possible so many people will visit this site so they’ll see the donate button ;-) Good luck!!
Look into your school’s financial aid. Or see if you can take out a loan that you’ll be able to repay after you graduate.
lol. detective crystal…
I just think UC Berkeley’s a great uni and it would be a pity if you couldn’t go because of financial problems … although i can’t do much either >_<.
I’m not sure, I don’t want to be killed in Beijing. Reason of death: suffocated in the metro.
but i would really like to watch diving…
That sucks about Berkeley. I’m going there, but being a California resident, it only costs me about $21K per year. I would love to donate about help you out, but as you can imagine, I am also trying to save every penny for college.
Let me know how your money-making project goes so that I can copy you and make millions, tybai.
Berkeley, like UCLA is very hilly, only it’s more on one big slope instead of several. And the main entrance opens right on to Telegraph Avenue and… well, it’s a really nice campus. Doesn’t have a consistent architectural style like UCLA, but that’s not really that important.
I work in a bank and I can give you any loan… oops, not for foreigners tho. But seriously cant you get a student loan for your college fees? Over here in Singapore practically anyone except millionaires take out a low-interest student loan, and pays it back when they start working after graduation.
hi! I clicked through to you from Blog Flux, because you made your blog sound interesting and you’re Canadian. Canada is cool, I’ve always wanted to go there, and I may very well at the end of the year!
Anyway, I’m an Aussie, but I when I stumbled here I noticed that you do the IB as well! I just finished, so I can totally empathise…all the best of luck!
I also semi-share your predicament about US unis (I hear you; what?!) I’m half American, half Aussie, so it makes some sense. I applied to Yale, Columbia and Uni of Rochester, and was rejected, waitlisted and accepted, in that order. I have also been offered a scholarship at the latter of $10,000, which is absolutely amazing, but as you say, fees are still $38,000 (for Rochester, in any case.) As I’ve started university in Australia, I’m not relying on it, but I’d really love to go. Got to get around my parents first. =)
Anyway, love your blog! I’ll be back…(to visit!)

Just a girl
You could try getting someone rich to fall in love with you and marry you?
Oh my god. That’s a lot of money for UC Berkeley. It isn’t an Ivy League school, so I don’t know how they get off charging that much… damn!
I hope you can come up with the money, but if not, there are other good schools you can go to for a lot less. It just sucks when you really have your heart set on something
Hey! I’m at UCB right now, and an easy way to cut down costs is just to opt out of living in dorms. You pay WAY less living in co-ops (I think it might be around 600/month including food costs), or you can sift through craigslist to find a roommate that might be willing to split a studio apartment with you.
Also, I know this may sound completely irrational, but taking out loans may not be a bad idea. A good education in a wonderful school is really priceless, and with the money that you’ll be making post-Berkeley, you’ll be able to pay it off somehow. Good luck! Hope I see you next year!
Oh, and there’s no way that you pay $1000 on books. Amazon has cheap deals, and google books sometimes has the textbooks online. There are also bookswaps, facebook marketplace, and lots of other resources that you could take advantage of to cut down costs there.
@ Connie - Wow, what a coincidence! Yea I heard that about dorms too. I’m going to live in rez for the first year at most, then it’s moving out for me. It’s comforting to hear that about textbooks, I think with your info, I can cut down my expenses by $6000 in my second year!
@ Abby - My mum suggested that too… JOKINGLY… i *think*
@ Just A Girl - Oh my, fellow IBer! Congrats for surviving the program =D It’s so awesome that Rochester offered a $10k scholarship.
@ Arielle - Thanks for the info, woooot can’t wait for univ!!
@ Deb - Yes I’m taking out a loan, from BMO as mentioned. The other ones around here are catered to Canadians only. I’ll see what I can find when I get down to the states.
Your expenses seem incredibly high compared to over here in the UK.
By law, the maximum fees a university here can charge is about £3000 ($6000). And average living expenses are about £100 (Including housing, food and entertainment) per week (Depends a fair bit on which city you’re living in, e.g. London is far more expensive!)
And we have all sorts of grants to help pay for a lot of that.
And the Government offers interest free student loans to pay for the full £3000 of your fees, and you don’t have to start paying them back until you’re earning over £15,000 per year.
And what is non-resident tuition? :???:
Didn’t they change it so you only have to pay 10% of your parents’ income for tuition? Or is that only for American citizens?
When I was applying for university (2 years ago), the tuition fee for “non-residents” was way higher. That’s why I ended up staying in Canada.
Worse comes to worse, you can go to the states for Grad school…
Did you already get accepted? Did they let you know about any entrance scholarships or bursaries? The bursaries given by the university are usually better than getting a bank loan. Good luck on the scholarships…
Wow…that’s a lot of money…
Good luck!
Wow, that is such a large amount. Actually one year there is more than the cost of my whole 3 year program.
You should check online, I forgot the site but its an Canadian site that shows many different scholarships available. Some of them are like contests. Have you signed up for a student loan?
If I were you, I would take a break from school and pile up some cash. I was in your shoes at one point and did the stupid thing - take out student loans. Now, I am paying for it… literally. If I had known what I know now, back then… I would have never don’t it.
You should only do something you can afford to do… and unless you can spare the cash, you simply can’t afford it.
Hey, another comment by moi, just to say I found this site -> http://www.chipin.com/ <- which might be handy. I know you already have a progress bar in your sidebar but I *think* this one updates it automatically?? Good luck!
Heck that’s expensive and there’s such limited government funding! I got full student loan from our government so I won’t have to worry about any of that until I graduate and start earning my own income. My parents can afford all my study expenses but I told them I want to earn my uni tuition expenses so that’s the student loan there. They pay for my books etc. though. But lots of uni textbooks are wholly unnecessary as well. I don’t buy half of my prescribed/recommend textbooks. You can also resell old textbooks when you finish each year and (hopefully) even earn some profit from that.
I second (third?) the student loan suggestion - check out private lenders, like Sallie Mae, for instance. Yes, the rates are sky-high, and yes, it’s a huge burden, but it’s doable. And yes, absolutely, you should definitely call the financial aid office, and you could tell them that you’ve been offered $4k from UBC - see if they’ll match it. If you show enough enthusiasm, they might - it’s happened before!
